today jess & i hopped behind the mic to talk about cop city through the lens of rape culture.
we talk about cop city, what rape culture actually is (beyond the dictionary definition), where do these two things meet, how we are healing this in practical terms in our own lives, and how elements of rape culture pervade other aspects of community issues in atlanta and georgia.
the ground lease to authorize cop city was being deliberated in city council last summer; in august 2021, another tragedy struck in the restaurant industry with the abduction and murder of mariam abdulrab. i wrote a letter to then-councilmember antonio brown of district 3 in response to this tragedy in conjunction with what was unfolding in regards to cop city. i wrote and sent to him on august 15, 2021, the day before council tabled the vote before cop city legislation was ultimately passed in september.
we reference that letter to help illustrate the connections between cop city, rape culture, and working class womxn/calls to “protect womxn”. you can read that letter in full here, slightly condensed from the original for purposes of this sharing.
