Ep. 001: White supremacy culture in journalism, pt. I

I’m joined by Chelsea Stone, journalist and editor based in Atlanta, to talk about how white supremacy culture manifests in journalism, based on our lived experiences and well-documented research within the field.

Theme song “By Summer” by Often. Also available on iTunes, Spotify, and Bandcamp.

This episode started with a Tik Tok video Chelsea sent me one day, I swear to God.

I’ve attached the PDF packet we go through here for your reference. The highlights are by me, wherein I’ve experienced and felt these deeply in my education and work in journalism over the years. Many of these I recall being drilled into me and other students while we were in J school. This discussion doesn’t serve to point fingers and call anyone malicious; the intention is to illustrate how deeply embedded white supremacy is in our society.

Does anyone else relate to this? Let us know if you’ve experienced these white supremacist cultural norms in your day-to-day life or chosen (or not chosen?) industries.

I’ll post part two next week.
